SO week 1 is over but it hasn’t been without its hiccups. Unfortunately I have small tear in a muscle in my back so I have been unable to train for a few days.

My physio says maybe Thursday of this week. There not much I can do about it other than rest but it’s not going to stop me getting some results from the nutrition point of view. After all as fitness professional I know that nearly 70% of our fat loss results will come from the nutrition side of things.

The weekend is always a challenge for people who are trying to eat healthier. Luckily my girlfriend was away this weekend so there was no pressure to go out and no temptations to out for a few beers with the lads either since there was no football on. This meant that I found it relatively easy to avoid alcohol this weekend.

We did however go out for a meal with some friends last night which I thought would be a challenge but I was able to choose foods off the menu that worked with the nutrition side of things.

Restaurants will always be happy to tweak their menu for you but most will have the choice of chicken or steak and you can swap the chips / potato or rice for a large green leafy salad.

For me the 2 hardest things is giving up bread and coffee with the coffee definitely being the hardest. This time round I haven’t missed the bread at all. Now I’m not on a low carb diet per se but I am trying to avoid carbs from grains and processed carbs, so any carbs that I am getting I am taking them from fruits and green leafy vegetables, especially spinach which I am eating loads of.

My caffeine lows and tiredness seem to have also subsided as do my cravings for carbs and all things sweet which I was getting last week.

I weighed myself this morning and I am now at 205lbs, which is a drop of just over 4lbs in 7 days.

This is pretty much what I would have expected for week one and while I am pleased with this I would have thought it would be a little more if I had been able to exercise properly.

I have a wedding to go to next Saturday which I expect will test my resolve both in terms of food and having a drink.

More updates to follow in a few days.

I didn’t get a chance to update you all yesterday as I was pretty rammed with personal training clients and fit camp sessions.

I’m also going to post some of the supplements I’m currently taking to help push my results on a bit.

I did however yesterday manage to stick to the diet side of things and even found some time to get a gym session in. The thing I’ve been finding the hardest about the diet is my habitual eating. I find myself veering into my usual haunts and have to remember that I’m trying to detox. Most of this is mental and something that I understand from my personal training clients and fit campers that can make or break any diet plan.

Anyway I seem to be over the tiredness that has plagued me over the last few day although my girlfriend says I’ve been even more grumpy than normal all week since I’ve started and I’m always like this when I go on a detox. To be fair I can be a bit grumpy sometimes but I hadn’t noticed any extra grumpiness.

I also got a chance e to workout today as well and basically did a circuit in my gym which consisted of:

Dumbell Bench Press

TRX Rows

Kettlebell Swings

Burpees

Sikipping

Each exercise for 1 minute and then straight on to the next one with no rest. I managed to get 5 circuits out which is not bad considering I only had 1 minute rest between circuits. I finished off the session with a warm down on the bike and plenty of stretching. In and out of the gym in just under 45 minutes. Just goes to prove you don’t need loads of time to get a god workout done.

Anyway as for the supplements I’m currently taking the following:

Bicarbonate of Soda

Omega 3 Fish Oil

Greens Drink

Magnesium Oil and finally……

Coconut oil – I know its not strictly a supplements but its great for cooking with and far healthier than margarine, vegetable oils and butter.

More updates tomorrow hopefully.

So we are into day 2 of the plan, I found yesterday pretty easy to be honest but I’m struggling a bit today.

Despite drinking loads of water yesterday I woke up feeling really dehydrated and lethargic. I have been a bit tired all day but have managed to stick to the nutrition side of things and have been eating lots of chicken, turkey and nuts and had scrambled eggs for breakfast. I have also been drinking lots of mineral water today.

It’s a weird feeling I don’t feel hungry but I do feel very low on energy. I’m assuming that this is a result of the 2 or 3 cups of coffee that I get through every day. In fact I often find myself sat in Starbucks during the day working on my laptop writing articles and workouts for clients. I’ve been here before so I know that this might last a few days but once I get over this it gets a lot easier.

I’ve also noticed today that I want to have my snacks that seem to be just habits and have to think a bit more about not having them. You know the ones I mean, like when you get the morning paper or want something sweet after your lunch.

I trained yesterday afternoon in the gym that I use, but haven’t done anything today yet as I have a match tonight (last league game of the season), hopefully I will get a good run-out.

More updates tomorrow.

Liam

I’ve just spent the weekend in Brighton at a wedding catching up with some of my oldest and best friends from back home in Ireland.

Of course this involves the usual drinking a bit more than you should (especially when there are a bunch of Irish people let loose on a free bar) and eating whatever is on offer as well. Then there is the food at the service stations (which has always been a particular weakness of mine) on the 6 hour drive down there and the energy drinks on the long drive back to Manchester last night. All in all a recipe for putting on a few extra pounds in a couple of days.

While it was great to see everyone and catch up because we don’t get to see each other very often, you always seen to notice that everyone has gotten a little older, greyer and waistlines have expanded a bit. I’ve even realised that this is especially true for myself. Working as a fitness professional helping people shed hundreds of pounds of body-fat every year, I really should be setting a better example, but I haven’t been recently. This may be because I work long hours but is that really a excuse?

I have been meaning to start my new MEAN Fat loss system myself for the last few weeks but I have been putting it off. I had a birthday night out 3 weeks ago for one of my friends so I put it off, I had a football tour to the Isle of Man over Easter weekend, so I couldn’t possibly start it then and a catch up with everyone at the wedding this weekend so there was no way I could have started it last week.

I have realised that I am making the same excuses to myself that I hear from my clients every day. I wouldn’t put up with it from a client so there is no way I should be putting up with it from myself. In fact I wouldn’t even take me on as a client if I was acting like this.

There will always be a night out or a wedding or a catch up or an anniversary or someone’s birthday and there will never be a perfect time to start to get into better shape so the best thing to do is to start today.

Starting today is better than never starting. So from today I will be spending the next 28 days getting into better shape and following my new MEAN fitness & fat loss system to the letter.

The last few weeks of beer, pizza, travelling food, hotel food, nights out and unhealthy snacking have taken their toll and I cannot let it continue. I have decided to blog about the process over the next 4 weeks to be held accountable and also to give people a bit of guidance on what to expect if you decide to try and lose a bit of weight yourself.

My current weight today is 209.2lbs and I would be expecting to get this to 195lbs in the next 4 weeks. That may sound like a big ask but that the type of results I get with my Manchester boot camp and 1-1 clients so I should expect to get the same for myself.

I will be posting regular updates as well as progress pictures and what sort of foods i’m eating as well as workout samples and challenges i’m facing along the way. And to prove I’m serious about these here is my before picture from this morning complete with just out of bed hair.
